What we do in the winter…
Our 4 safari tents are deconstructed after we close and brought down to the Hub for storage. It keeps them safe from the worst of the winter weather and gives us easy access for deep cleaning everything.
It’s a big job, which takes a couple of days per tent and a crew of 4 for the heaviest parts of the job. #batteningdownthehatches #winterready #wildwoodscamping #glampingscotland #behindthescenes
Have you seen our gorgeous new branded items in the campsite shop?
The buff is such a smart and handy accessory and is made from recycled plastic bottles π
The baseball cap and our new staff uniform are all organic cotton, we love them!
Cute enamel cups are perfect for taking camping and the chilly bottle too π
Then there’s the embroidered jersey blanket, screen-printed tea towels and the jute shopping bag π₯°
The notebook with wild animals on is really beautiful, we’re using it as a wildlife journal and sketchbook as it has plain pages that you can use anyway you like. And for wee ones we have colouring pencils and writing pencils.
All perfectly designed by clever @viv_seeley and carefully printed by @brightgreenprint #sustainable #scottish #ruberslaw #wildwoodscamping
Come for a walk with us π
This path takes you from the walled garden to Castle View and two of our safari tents or just walk it, it’s such a beautiful place to be.
Because it’s a semi-ancient woodland it supports a wide variety of trees, shrubs, flower, bird and insect life.

The grand Scots Pine at Ruberslaw in the moonlight! April’s full moon is tonight, and with mainly clear skies overnight it should be lovely and bright! This full moon is known as the Pink Moon, as it’s usually when the wildflowers and blossoms start to bloom πΈ #pinkmoon #camping #nightsky #ruberslaw #scotspine #fullmoon #glampingunderthestars
Day 23 - Birdlife at Ruberslaw
Which birds might you be able to spot at Ruberslaw?
Today we could hear a chiff chaff in the woods behind the walled garden. They’re one of the earliest of our summer migrants π. Also spotted a pair of greenfinch in an oak tree yesterday, a welcome sight as they have been in decline π
The woodpeckers were busy in the woods too. You can often see them at Roe Deer Rest safari tent, they have favourite trees up there.
We’ve seen mistlethrushes when we’ve been out and about in the fields lately.
There are often buzzards around, they nest not far away. Listen for their distinctive call and watch them spiralling high in the sky.
In May the swallows will hopefully be back at the Hub, their non-stop chatter is the background music of the campsite π
There are many more birds around through the year, let us know if you spot any wildlife during your stay βΊοΈ #wildcamping #birdlife #scottishwildlife #ruberslaw
Day 22 - The Shop Stock is ready!
It’s always fun to get the little campsite shop ready for a new season βΊοΈ Savour the Flavour’s preserves arrived today, we’re desperate to try some new jams! Sausages, bacon and burgers will arrive fresh for opening from Briggsy’s butchers in Jedburgh.
As always we’ve got @hannahlongmuirartist ‘s beautiful cards in stock and we’ve got a nice range of nature and outdoors books lining the shelves.
Watch this space for a fresh range @ruberslawwildwoods branded products coming soon, we think you’ll love them π₯° #ruberslaw #campsitesuk #localproduce #buylocal #campingscotland #glampingscotland #woodlandcamping
Day 21 - What about bad weather?!
So it’s still a bit wet out there, we’ve had sunshine and showers today, as demonstrated by the little Scilla flowers in the garden. We’ve got bad weather covered though, ways to keep you cosy!
In the Hub we have underfloor heating throughout the loos and showers with lots of hot water. A large part of the Hub is the covered area with picnic tables and a huge open fire.
You can have a campfire at any pitch on the camp site and also at our safari tents. The safari tents also have a gas fire and lots of extra blankets for colder nights cooried in.
Day 20 - Bees!
Well we saw and heard the first bees in the walled garden today :) They were very busy on the mahonia flowers, which also smell divine.
In the shelter of the walled garden you're sure to see a lot of insectlife working away during your stay.
We plant a lot of flowers in among our fruit and veg beds that bees love to help polllinate the produce.

Day 19 - Thunderbox Upgrades at Minto View
We’ve just completed the new Thunderbox build at Minto View! We don’t sit still for long π
This gives Minto View 2 huts now. One is a double toilet and the other has your sink on one side and a log store on the other. Hopefully this will work well in this woodland, thank you all for feedback, it helps us provide the best facilities for you.
Thunderbox dos and don’ts -
- Everyone must sit on loo for all functions - solids are composted, urine is drained away.
- Add some of the provided wood shavings to the compost area with each use. PLEASE no shavings in the front urine section as it clogs the pipes.
- Keep the loo seat closed between uses, helps the compost to breakdown and keeps flies away.
- We provide the shavings, loo roll, hand sanitiser and sanitary bags.
At the sink -
- Fresh drinking water is provided daily and is connected to a pump tap at the sink.
- The sinks drain into a soak away pit in the ground, they can only drain fluids.
- Any food scraps and fats should be scraped into a bin before washing up, it only clogs the pipes.
Day 18 - Ruberslaw Apple Juice and the Walled Garden trees
Our apple juice is a lovely treat to enjoy on your camping trip or it's lovely to take back home as a gift.
The juice is 100% pressed apples, no added anything! Since it is so pure, it works really well as a mixer or base for cocktails and mocktails, and you can dilute it down for children's taste buds.
The juice is sold exclusively in our campsite shop and is one of the tasties in our breakfast hampers.
The apple trees themselves are nearly all original to the walled garden, making them over a hundred years old!
We have quite a few varieties and the juice is made up of a blend of these varieties, making every year's batch slightly different according to the apple harvest.
The varieties have lovely names, such as Laxton's Fortune, Adam's Permain, Howegate Wonder, Worcester Permain, Cripps Pink, mainly eating apples and some cooking.
Day 17 - only a week@until we open! ποΈ
We’d like your help with this one? What’s your favourite item that you always take in a camping trip? Is there something you can’t live without or that you would recommend to other campers?
It’s fairly light until about 7pm here now, a good head torch is a great thing to bring. Then there’s the fun camping innovations, when else would you use a Spork βΊοΈ
Day 16 - the campsite logo
Some of you will know this story already but a good story’s worth hearing again π why we have the meconopsis as our logo…
Our Camp site’s logo is the Tibetan Blue Poppy Meconopsis baileyii, not just because it is one of the most attractive poppies, but because of the family connection to its discovery and classification under the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.
The Tibetan Blue Poppy was identified first by Col. F.M. Bailey (1882-1967) who was a soldier, spy, political administrator, linguist, explorer, a keen naturalist and author amongst other things, with a history of amazing adventures.
Relevant to the poppy is the hazardous expedition with Capt. H.T. Moreshead (working for The Survey of India) through extremely rugged country in the Himalaya to establish whether the Tsangpo river flowed into the Brahmaputra River (in that pre-Google Earth era this was a serious gap in European strategic knowledge).
As with a lot of his work, a main political purpose opened up opportunities for his scientific curiosity and collecting. His sample of the Tibetan Poppy (collected near Lunang, in the Rong Chu valley, Kongbo at 10,500 ft in S.E Tibet) enabled the flower to be classified for the first time as a distinct species. However, by one description the material was “Little more than a flower stuffed into a notebook” which led to the original classification being challenged, until firmly re-established after much detailed work in the early 2000’s.
There are many stories worth telling about Col. Bailey, one very memorable one being that he was hired by the military counter-espionage service in Tashkent in Turkestan – now Uzbekistan - where in 1918-1920 he was working under-cover gathering political intelligence just after the Bolsheviks took power. Tasked with locating a notorious British spy named Bailey (i.e. himself!) he went into hiding in the mountains. That in itself was a story of great bravery, Bailey at one point breaking a leg in deep snow, having to adopt many disguises, and move on frequently for months.
Day 15 - Pitch Sizes
Something we advise on quite often is which of our pitch sizes will best suit your tent. Here's a general guide to help, but we're always happy to help!
In the Walled Garden we have small pitches (up to a 4 man tent), medium pitches (up to a 6 man tent), large pitches (up to an 8 man tent) and extra large pitches (they really are! For really big tents or for lots of space around your tent e.g. pitch 6 is approx 11m x 12m). The tent shown is on a large pitch, pitch 3, you can see the allowance you need for tent ropes.
In the woodlands we have small, medium and large pitches. They can accommodate the same size pitches as in the walled garden but, as shown in the lovely photo, the tent ropes can go out into the trees at the pitch edges.
The pitch sizes in metres are shown in a dropdown list of available pitches when you make your booking.
#ruberslaw #tentlife #chooseyourpitch
Day 13 - Camping Friendships. We didn’t have a theme planned for today but it presented itself βΊοΈ The team were challenged in torrential rain today but laughed through it, all get on really well. The thing is this got us thinking of how many great friendships have been made at Ruberslaw over the years. There are groups of friends who have been coming for a really long time, kids who have made friends for life. We’ve had weddings where guests return every year and just love it. There’s something about camping that creates these wonderful friendships, memories and, oh, disasters that you can laugh your way out of, or at least laugh about in a few years!! #thebadgeratemybirthdaycake #campingwithfriends #campingwithkids #teamrwwc
Day 12 - Growing Produce.
The glasshouse and walled garden are getting busy with new growth. The resident rhubarb and fruit bushes are growing well, they’ve definitely woken up from their winter sleep! The wild garlic shoots are a couple of inches now, great for in salads or making pesto π. In the glasshouse we’ve got garlic and onions doing well in the planting beds and the chilli and tomato seedlings are on their way. So hopefully lots of tasty treats for you when you’re camping βΊοΈβΊοΈποΈ #ruberslaw #springcamping #walledgarden #homegrown #campfirecooking
Day 11 - Your favourite days out from the campsite. The Scottish Borders Donkey Sanctuary open in 1 week βΊοΈ
There’s such fab places to visit in the area; great parks and walks at Wilton Park (Hawick) and Harestanes.
Hawick swimming pool is a good go-to for rainy day, they have a soft play as well.
Jedburgh is nice for a wander and has 2 museums, the Abbey and independent shops.
You get the warmest welcome and unique experience at Rulewater Alpacas, just over the hill from us.
There are walks absolutely everywhere in the Borders, from town trails to hill walking (did you know Ruberslaw hill is a marilyn).
Day 10 - The first lambs are here π₯° They are as adorable as they look!! Hopefully there will be hundreds more to come, most of the sheep have their lambs in the farm sheds and go out in the fields when the lambs are big enough and it’s a bit warmer outside. They’re so lovely to watch in the springtime when they’re playing and making little gangs π. Please remember to keep dogs on leads at all times and if you’re walking in the fields stick to the edges, go around the sheep and not through the middle of a flock because sometimes ewes can get separated from lambs and have trouble finding & accepting them again. #lambs #spring #ruberslaw #campingscotland #wildwoods #welcometotheworld
Day 9 - Night time at the campsite.
At Ruberslaw the dark skies at night are very clear, so many stars to see. One night, while walking the site for our 10pm quiet time, there was a group of children lying in the walled garden all looking at the stars, they hadn't seen so many before!
The night sky apps are a great way to identify the stars if you fancy a bit of stargazing π
Day 8 - International Women’s Day. We’re pleased that lots of women choose Ruberslaw to come solo camping. Solo camping can be daunting but with the right support it can be a great adventure.
Also celebrating all of the amazing women that are currently or previously part of the team at Ruberslaw, thank you all ππ #internationalwomensday #solocamping #womensupportingwomen #campingadventures #camping #bestteam
Day 6 already!!
Today have a wee look at our accessible facilities. We have a flat pitch in the walled garden with a parking space alongside. The pitch is not far from the Hub/facilities and there is lowered access into the Hub. In the Hub we have a large wet room with bars, a shower seat, a bench for clothes etc. and with the underfloor heating in there it’s a very nice space to use βΊοΈ #accessibletravel #accessiblecamping #campingforall #ruberslaw #campingscotland
Day 5 - Singing "5 Gold Stars" Thank you to everyone who takes the time to leave us a review, it's such a great way to let others know what to expect.
"Strongly recommend if you are looking for place to calm down or be away from the city. Even for a few hours."
"Me and my partner booked to stay here in a safari tent last minute for our honeymoon. It was absolutely amazing!"
"Stayed here twice now, it's a real gem and while I don't want it to get overrun with people everyone should experience it!"
Day 3 is all about our 3 camping woodlands, choose from Home Wood, Minto View or Castle View. Who's tried all of them? Woodland Camping at Ruberslaw gives you the experience and freedom of wild camping but with the support of the facilities and the team to look after you.
#wildwoodscamping #familytime #outdoors #ruberslaw #campingscotland
Day 2 of our countdown to camping βΊοΈ #worldbookday π where better to relax with a book than at your tent, with the birds singing in the background. All about nature and the outdoors, for young and old π #campingscotland #tranquility #reading #colouring #learning #nature #metime
